Santa Monica United G2001 once again made club history this weekend.  G2001 will be the first girls team in SMU history to earn an invitation to the country’s top summer college showcase, Surf Cup in San Diego.  The team accomplished this feat by advancing to the finals of the top G2001 bracket in the Man City Cup.

The team started off the weekend with a battle of the Westside.  In pool play the team played cross town rival Westside Breakers.  After a scoreless 1st half the girls were able to get a goal in the 50th minute and comfortably held on for 1-0 win.  Head coach Fabian Amezaga said, “It’s an emotional game for the girls, as many of the girls on the other team were classmates and friends.  It’s been a long time since we have played them and it was nice to get a win.”

Pool play continued and SMU ended up winning the bracket, scoring 5 goals while allowing 2.  The semifinal saw them taking on the #1 ranked team in Nevada, LVPSA.  The game was the 4th match for the girls in less than 48 hours.  They were still playing short- handed from a long and grueling spring.  SMU started the scoring vs. LVPSA in the 20th minute with a goal and went up at halftime up 1-0.  They opened up the 2nd half by getting a 2nd goal in the 50th minute, going up 2-0, and held on for the 2-1 win.

In the final, the girls faced the recently crowned 2017 CalSouth National Cup Champions, the San Diego Rebels.  The game was a hard fought match and both teams were exhausted from the long weekend.  The game was tied 0-0 at halftime and both teams seemed to be saving their energy for the final half.  SMU opened the scoring in the 55th by scoring a PK to go up 1-0.  Rebels responded quickly by scoring 2 goals in the next 5 minutes.  SMU would grab another goal late in the game, but the Rebels went on to win 3-2.

Assistant Coach Ben Nicholson, who coached the G2001 for the final game, summarized the match: “This was the toughest and most spirited performance I've seen from an SMU team. We not only presented the opposition with difficult intellectual puzzles to solve, but we executed with determination and desire. The girls showed they have character to match their ability.”
