The Santa Monica United G2001 team wrapped up the fall campaign with an impressive showing at the 7th Annual November Nights College showcase. They played outstanding soccer all weekend long scoring 10 goals and allowing only 3.
They played their 1st match on Friday vs. Utah Soccer Alliance, the number 3 ranked team in Utah. The girls came out inspired and jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the 1st 3 minutes. The games settled down after that and the girls coasted to a 4-1 victory.

Saturday had them warming up in a torrential downpour but by the time kick off began the rain had stopped. The next opponent was IE Surf West Premier, the 5th place team in CSL Premier 2016. The SMU G01 last faced Surf in the CSL Premier Playoff in June which saw SMU fall 0-1. The game started slow on a soaked field with both teams feeling one another out. The 2nd half saw 5 goals in total with SMU getting the game winner in the final 2 minutes. It was a hard fought game that could have gone either way.

Sunday brought on the biggest challenge of the weekend with the girls facing the 2016 CSL Premier Champion and tournament host LA Galaxy San Diego. The girls last played LAGSD in the sweet 16 of 2016 National Cup and were defeated 4-0. The 1st half was mostly controlled by LAGSD with SMU having a few chances. The 2nd half was much different, with the SMU girls team grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 1st 10 minutes. SMU would continue to have the momentum, adding 2 goals in the next 7 minutes. When the final whistle blew SMU won by a final score of 4-0.
The G'01, coached by Fabian Amezaga, with assistance from Ben Nicholson, won the Copa Mundial (top flight) by a 9 point margin and did it in dominating fashion. The girls played beautiful soccer all weekend long and it has been great to see the progress of the team in the last six months. We are looking forward to getting back after high school break. Well done, girls! SMU is proud of you!!!
