SMU’s G2001 team has clinched the Southern California National Premier League (SCNPL) championship for Girls U16. The girls clinched with a gutty, shorthanded 1-0 win over Downey FC G01 Premier on Saturday. This prestigious accomplishment follows on the heels of the team reaching the quarterfinals in National Cup the previous weekend. The G01 will travel to Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana for the National Premier League finals July 13 – 17th. This is U.S. Club Soccer’s national championship competition.

Asked about the accomplishment, Coach Amezaga said “it’s been a long and grueling spring for us and they had to dig deep to get this one.”  He also said “Playing in the NPL Championships in July is a great accomplishment for our girls program.  The G’01 continues to trail blaze and do things that haven’t been done before; I am beyond proud of their efforts and they deserve the success.”

In July 2015, the G2001’s won the national championship in National Cup –President’s Division GU13 in Overland, Kansas. In July 2016, the girls won the Gothia Cup - Flight B in Sweden. Hopefully, the third July in a row is charmed too!
