SMU G2001 ARE UNITED CUP CHAMPIONS!!!

The Santa Monica United G’01 team are Champions of the SuperLiga Flight 1 United Cup in Orange County. Led by coach Fabian Amezaga and Ben Nicholson the G’01 played fantastic soccer all weekend scoring 15 goals and allowing 3 all weekend. The girls concluded the summer season by saving their best for last.

In pool play the team played Albion SC (Premier team) and was up to the task. The girls dominated play with a convincing 3-0 win. Later in the day they played a tough Beach SB team and played fantastic soccer jumping out to quick 1-0 lead and managed to win 2-0. In the final game of pool play they played Arsenal West EGSL team that beat them 1-0 in the final of the Cerritos Cup in May. The girls were up for this game and it showed the progress that they have made over the past 2 months by earning a convincing 4-0 win.

In the quarterfinals the girls faced a tough Legends team. The team played beautiful soccer in the 1st 25 minutes by playing sharp and quick possession soccer and it led to a quick score. The team conceded their 1st goal of the tournament right before the half and the score was 1-1 at halftime. The team settled down and scored quickly in the start of the 2nd half and put the game out of reach. In the semifinals the team once again would face another premier team, the Claremont Stars. In the first half most of the game was played in the middle third and both teams remained patient. With no real chances the score was tied 0-0 at the half. The second half saw the G’01 team have several chances. The girls hit the post twice and had several shots on frame. Despite dominating the score remained 0-0 and the game went to Pks. The girls stayed composed and ended up winning 7-6 in PK (9 Pk takers took Pk shots!)

The final was the 6th game of the weekend. The SMU G01 team would once again face their 3rd Premier team of the weekend, Downey FC. The last time the 2 teams played was in April in SCNPL and Downey won 3-0. The girls were ready for the final, as they scored in the 1st 15 seconds and were up 1-0. In the 30th minute Downey responded with a free kick from distance and the score was tied 1-1 to at the half. The G’01 settled down and played fantastic soccer in the 2nd half. They scored in the 50th minute on a nice sequence and took the lead 2-1. 5 minutes later the girls put the game away with a 3rd goal taking the score to 3-1. Downey would score in the 60th minute but the G’01 were never in danger after that and held on for a 3-2 victory.

The girls wrapped up a great summer with this championship. They beat 3 Premier teams and 3 Flight 1 teams in the processes and poised for the 2016 league season to begin. Well done ladies, SMU is proud of you!
